Breaking news - DIGITEK RECALLED! Do you need a Digitek Lawyer?
Digitek, known generically as digoxin, is a drug used to treat heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. The drug is manufactured by Actavis Totowa LLC.
On April 25, 2008, Actavis recalled all lots of Digitek because some tablets contain double the amount of active ingredient, posing a digitalis toxicity risk. The company initiated the recall after receiving numerous reports of illness and injuries in Digitek patients.
After the recall, consumers were made aware of an August 2006 warning letter to Actavis from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reprimanding the company for failing to provide periodic safety reports at a manufacturing plant in New Jersey. According to a recently filed Digitek lawsuit, some of the Digitek included in the April 2008 recall was manufactured at that Actavis plant.
In addition, an FDA inspection of the same manufacturing plant uncovered six potentially serious and unexpected adverse drug events for some of Actavis’ products, including Digitek, that date back to 1999.
Renal failure patients face serious risk of digitalis toxicity
Patients suffering from renal failure who take recalled double-strength Digitek are significantly at risk for digitalis toxicity. This is a condition in which the amount of digitalis in the blood becomes too high, causing toxic effects. Some symptoms of digitalis toxicity include:
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• dizziness,
• low blood pressure,
• cardiac instability, and
• bradycardia.
